Loving greetings from a very locked-down London

In keeping with current conditions, I've moved most of my teaching online, as have many yoga and meditation teachers. From one point of view I am finding this interesting, yet it is not-so-good in other ways. I miss the give and take of prana that takes usually place when students and I am sitting in the same room. I find that people are more reserved when speaking into computer, and they tend to ask fewer interesting questions – perhaps that will change as we get more used to doing it.

On the positive side, teaching online has widened my demographics. I can now offer my teachings to people who can’t be physically present in my London studio – or at Yoga Vidya in Germany, where I often teach.

Wherever you are in the world, I am now able to invite you to share my knowledge and the experience I’ve gained from practising and teaching yoga and meditation for more than 40 years.

I worked with the International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres for 26 years and directed centres in New York, Toronto, London, New Delhi and the Himalayas. Now I'm a free-lance yogi, based in London and (pre-lockdown) travelling frequently to teach. I also write books on various aspects of yoga that otherwise don’t receive much attention (click here to explore my books).

In addition to having spent time in the Himalayas, focusing on my personal practice, I hold an MA in Traditions of Yoga and Meditation from SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies), University of London.

Before the lockdown, I frequently organised pilgrimages to India. I plan to return to doing this when we are able to travel again.

Some preliminary suggestions for enhancing your yoga experience:

  • See your body and mind as a laboratory. Through your own practice, test what you have heard in classes and read in books.
  • Never stop practising - this is perhaps the most grievous mistake that many yoga teachers make. Be careful to not get so caught up in teaching and giving to your students that you forget the importance of recharging you own energy.
  • Become a living embodiment of your teaching.
  • PRACTISE - PRACTISE - and then PRACTISE some more. A good teacher always teaches from her own direct personal experience!
  • Book onto my advanced courses for yoga teachers
